This is a beautifully designed sculptural and unusual example of a helical Cor-ten rusted effect staircase, making use of a combination of natural materials, i.e. rusted metal, stainless steel, glass and Oak.
The curved outer balustrade fabricated from one 5m x 2m Cor-ten plate, forms the structural support for almost the entire staircase, with the profiled inner stringer only to accept the fibrous plaster soffitt and the Oak treads and risers. Notice the clever shape of the 10mm thick curved outer balustrade, starting at 1500mm high reducing to floor level, with the stainless steel handrail continuing above to give the protection required. A single toughened floating glass panel forms the inner balustrade, allowing a clear view of the three dimensional shape of the curved underside and saw tooth stringer.
